Abstract
This editorial introduces a special section on generating virtual images for promoting visual artificial intelligence. Virtual image generation has become an important technique for training and testing visual AI systems, providing automatically annotated data that can complement or replace manually labeled real-world data. The special section brings together recent advances in synthetic data generation, domain adaptation, and their applications in visual AI tasks.
